

Tilda Swinton started making films with Derek Jarman in 1985, with a small part in
Caravaggio, and went on to work with him on seven more films before his death in 1994,
with important roles in The Last Of England, The
Garden, War Requiem and Wittgenstein.
In 1990 she won the Coppa Volpi at the Venice Film Festival for her performance in
Jarman’s Edward II. Swinton came to wider international recognition in 1992 with her
extraordinary portrayal of Orlando in the film by Sally Potter. Since then, her work has
included films with Lynn Hershman-Leeson, Susan Streitfeld, John Maybury, Tim Roth
and Robert Lepage. In 2000, she made The Deep End with David Siegel and Scott
McGehee, for which she won numerous international awards, including a Golden Globe
Nomination for Best Actress. More recent credits include Spike Jonze’s Adaptation, David
Mackenzie’s beat noir Young Adam (acclaimed at Cannes in 2003), Jim Jarmusch’s Broken
Flowers and films by Mike Mills and Francis Lawrence. She played the title role of the
White Witch in Chronicles of Narnia: the Lion, the Witch
and the Wardrobe for director
Andrew Adamson, one of the most successful film releases of all time. She also worked
with the great Bela Tarr in The Man From London which premiered in competition at the
2007 Cannes Film Festival. Tilda has recently finished shooting the eponymous lead in
Julia for maverick French director Erick Zonca, and David Fincher’s The
Curious Case of Benjamin Button opposite Brad Pitt. This year, she will star opposite Pitt, George Clooney
and Frances McDormand in Joel and Ethan Coen’s film Burn
After Reading, and will be
Lady Macbeth in Come Like Shadows, John Maybury’s film of the Shakespeare play,
opposite Sean Bean. Swinton has recently been nominated for a Golden Globe for Best
Actress for her leading role in Michael Clayton, in which she stars opposite George
Clooney.
